YCN

What is YCN?

"Since 2001 YCN has orchestrated and curated a series of educational and professional development programmes; aiming to stimulate, support and showcase emerging creative talent.

Our YCN Student Awards annually shine a light on emerging creative excellence; and run closely alongside the many Universities, Colleges and Art & Design schools across the UK, and overseas too. The awards are based around a collection of live creative briefs; written each year by partnering brands, charities and other organisations. The most recent collection presented challenges from organisations as diverse as Warp, Sega, Fairtrade, the Big Issue and 20th Century Fox."

Each year YCN online holds a student competition in which major companies and organisations present real briefs.

YCN: Briefs

ESPN:

The creative challenge.

With our range of on-air and digital services, ESPN truly understands and serves the younger sports fan. ESPN’s mission is “to serve sports fans, wherever sports are watched, listened to, discussed, debated, read about or played.” Currently the average ESPN subscriber is an older male aged 45+. We want this campaign to convince younger (aged under 35) male sports fans to recognise ESPN as the most relevant sports broadcaster in the UK for them.

Analysis of the brief.

ESPN are asking for younger viewers (aged under 35). Ideas that come to mind is advertise sports that are exclusive to ESPN, as any person of any age will want to watch their favourite sport. I find that this brief is quite difficult, as some suggestions you are unable to do; for example change the type of sports broadcasted, or find younger commentators to encourage younger viewers, or add special features like selection what camera you want to view from. Only way I can see you trying to get younger viewers within the this brief is how the posters are designed. At this present time younger citizens prefer something abstract, cool, 'in your face' and easy to look at. You could design a submerged materials of all types of sport that ESPN broadcast, with a graphic abstract overlay so that this looks futuristic. I don't think this brief is for me, as this seems very complicated, and I don't think I will enjoy it.

The Feel Good Drinks Company:

The creative challenge.

Brief 1:
Make us famous.

Create a campaign that communicates 3 simple things: our brand name, what our drinks look like and that our drinks are choc-full of natural, tasty, fruitiness. And do all this in a way that is unique, memorable and makes people laugh.

Brief 2:
Fruit not sugar.

We asked some people if they like their soft drinks to have lots of added sugar in them and they said no. No surprises there, then. Of course, we don’t add any sugar to our drinks – nada de nada, niente
di niente, absolutely zilch.

You might be surprised to hear though, that some of our competitors do add sugar to their ‘healthy’ drinks - and lots of it too. The ASA has banned both Vitamin Water and This Water from using misleading ads, which was in part due to the amount of sugar they heap in their drinks. They found that one bottle of This Water could contain up to 42g, that’s 8.5 teaspoons. A bottle of Vitamin Water was found to contain 23g, so just the 5 teaspoons then.
We know you can make great tasting natural juice drinks without adding sugar – we do it everyday. We think that when someone chooses a healthy drink they don’t want or expect it to have heaps of sugar in it. We want you to come up with an idea that tells people the facts, so they can make an informed choice next time they’re at the chiller. Can you communicate this in a fun and feel good way?

Analysis of the brief.

The Feel Good Drinks Company is a very cheerful, happy go lucky company which sounds great and seems like a lot of fun. With this brief there are two to choose from, which sound very enjoyable. There are some tasks on the brief that sound a little silly; for example brief two. Brief one sounds too easy, and for me I would like something more challenging. The designs I would imaging creating would be bright colours, sunshine, happy faces for this company. I would have a lot of fun designing posters, banners, small animation for this brief, but I would like something that you have to think carefully about. If I would start on this brief, I would research on what type of designs they have on their bottles at the moment, and see if they have had any previous advertisement.

M&S:

The creative challenge.

Your brief is to create the ultimate picnic pack. It could be themed around a type of picnic or event, or around the type of food included eg. a romantic first date or anniversary picnic, a Spanish picnic, a picnic for an open air classical concert, a foodie’s gastro picnic etc. You should include everything needed for the perfect picnic: food (sweet and savoury), drinks, cutlery, plates, napkins etc. Think about the occasion, then devise the menu and decide on the physical packaging for all the food items and design of each item. Consider the overall carrier. It could be a picnic hamper, a cool bag or even just a cardboard box, but it will also need to be designed within the theme. Consider physical packaging; your design needs to be fit for purpose while creating minimal waste/refuse. The customer should feel like this is a fantastic treat and that M&S have thought of everything to make the occasion perfect.

Analysis of the brief.

This brief sounds very interesting, I think some of the suggestions they have used; a romantic first date or anniversary picnic, a Spanish picnic, a picnic for an open air classical concert, a foodie’s gastro picnic are quite good'. I think when it says Consider physical packaging; your design needs to be fit for purpose while creating minimal waste/refuse, means think about the size, shape and design of the packaging of the box which the picnic will come in. I think this is the type of brief I would enjoy, as this has no real graphic design area in it.

Fedrigoni:

The creative challenge.

We’re after a fully integrated campaign, full of originality. You are free to respond and create communication or content in any combination of mediums you wish. We are open to new ideas, as long as you can fully demonstrate how your work will promote the ‘Imaginative Colours’ range across numerous channels, you’re well on your way!

Analysis of the brief.

This brief will be quite exciting, as I can use any media I would like. If I would use this brief, I would choose graphic images, animation, small video clips. I will first find research about the company, and ‘Imaginative Colours’. I would design posters, and banners for the ‘Imaginative Colours’, and would try to create a small promotion video for adverts to broadcast on TVs. I would use unusual ways to make the advertisement look interesting, and wanting the public to see the advertisement. I would show step by steps, with a detailed description on how I would create the piece of work, and say where I will be going with this, and why.

Graze:

The creative challenge.

Part A:
Grazers appreciate the subtleness of the graze box, especially in the work environment where personal mail may be frowned upon. So a musical, neon, sequined box might not be the best solution. The textured brown board has been a key part of the graze brand from the start. We love the natural rough texture and the effect of printing on the surface. If you think you have a better solution however, and brilliant reasons to back it up, go for it. We care for the environment just as much as we care for our grazers, so please bare this in mind. Every graze box goes on a journey through the post so when it arrives it shouldn’t look dirty or unappealing. We want people to jump for joy and shout ‘huzzah!’ (and other such exclamations) when their box turns up in their post. Use the box as a way of highlighting the tastiness and healthiness of the food contained; the box and food should work together in delicious harmony.
Remember to allow space for the address and postage paid stamp. A paper serviette is included in every box. Consider this another canvas to work on.

Part B:
The word graze often causes confusion – people spell it greys and grays. Could the logo help with this in any way? Our tagline ‘nature delivered’ plays a key role in explaining what we do, so we’d prefer it if this was included in some way. graze is a modern digital business: Our boxes are ordered from our website but all our products are sourced from nature. How can you portray the two elements ‘online’ and ‘nature’ within the logo?
The logo should be versatile; it appears on almost everything we produce. Don’t forget the .com (dot com).

Part C:
Visually there are no limitations. Be innovative, explore materials, experiment with layout. Do everything you can to make sure that whoever’s doormat this lands on, it screams ‘Read me!’ (Though perhaps not literally, that might be a bit scary). In terms of content, you must make sure you explain what graze is, what graze does and what graze has to offer. How you do this is up to you. We currently run a promotion alongside the majority of our marketing, which allows new customers to try a box for free. Consider how a promotion may work within this particular media.

Analysis of the brief.

I think this brief sounds very exciting, and wounds very enjoyable. It has a lot of graphic desiging in the project, which is what I like. First I would research the comany see what their packaging looks like, and find if I can change anything on there. Once I find that I would then see there logo, and think of ideas on how I would be able to design my own logos, to suit the company. I would keep to the breif by using the tagline; ‘nature delivered’, and creating the logo to suit the company; ‘online’ and ‘nature’.

In Part C I would find research on what leaflets have aready been created, and find inspiration from them. I would use the promotion on the leaflet, to get poeple to visit the website.

Brief: Graze

I have chosen the brief: Graze.
The reason why I choose this brief was because as soon as I read the tasks I immediately came up with ideas of what I could create. I thought that the task were very interesting as well, there is three parts.

Part A: The graze box is the embodiment of the graze brand; it’s charming, natural, honest, and premium, but we think it can work even harder and bring more excitement to the food inside and to the brand as a whole. So part A of your challenge is to refresh our graze box. All the surfaces can be changed but the structure (size, shape and the way it’s put together) can’t.

Part B:  We like our logo, it says friendly and has charm but we’d love it to be more distinctive and unique. So, part B is to redesign our logo. Make graze stand out from the crowd and better communicate what we are all about.

Part C: Part C is a bit different... We want to see how these new elements would work in a direct mail marketing campaign. We see it as a really interesting medium and we’re looking for a creative solution that will stand out from ‘junk mail’ and make people leap onto the internet to sign up.

All these very different tasks would make the brief very interesting, and would make me constantly active working on many different things.

Full Brief:

Make the graze brand more distinctive and desirable

Background

In short, www.graze.com sends healthy snacks by post, hence our tagline nature delivered... We started graze in 2008 as a way of offering office workers a tasty (and nutritious) alternative to those 3pm temptations like crisps and biscuits. Think of us as providing ‘pleasurable health’; we create really tasty, exciting recipes using natural, wholesome ingredients. It’s a win win situation.

How graze works

Grazers choose their favourite food from our range of 100 nutritious snacks, we handpick them a box and pop it in the post, first class, straight to their door. Bam. Better snacking is as simple as that. To really get graze you need to try a box so, if you’re not already a grazer, go to graze.com/YCN and use the code YCNFREE to try one free graze box and another half price. We’re seriously proud of our graze box but 3 years on we think it could be even better. That’s where you come in.

Research: Part A

Graze has specifically said for part A; "The graze box is the embodiment of the graze brand; it’s charming, natural, honest, and premium, but we think it can work even harder and bring more excitement to the food inside and to the brand as a whole.
So part A of your challenge is to refresh our graze box. All the surfaces can be changed but the structure (size, shape and the way it’s put together) can’t".

First I shall see what the box looks like first, before thinking of any plans. This is what the original box looks like at the moment:

Credit to: blogspot.com

This is the outside of the box, it is simple, and nicely packaged. I think the texture and colour they use already is good, it looks natural, and organic which is what the company is about, although I think this can be improved. It could be improved by using a design, or new colours?

This is inside the box, very neatly packed, giving you your chosen products in each container. A lot of the images used to cover up each container uses dark green colours, and I don't think the textured box colour fits well with it.

Now knowing what the box looks like I can think of ideas on how it I could improve the design and look of the box. I think if the box colour was darkened slightly this will increase the impression of it's charming, natural, honest, and premium look. This would also not clash with the images inside, and would flow better, making it look like it is all one product.

Ethical Design

I think if you had to charge for a design for a charity is allowed. I don't think they should be able to get it for free, because this is someones job, and this is how they bring food on the table. I don't think the price of the design should be huge, although the typical price for the design. I still think that well known designers should still charge although not as nearly as they would for a less known designer, or a local designer.

I think that designers are helping to promote 'bad' products that people would like. I think this because they are styling the product on a poster in such a way that makes them look 'cool', this is helping to sell the 'bad' product. I think it is down the the designer depending how far they would go to promote the product, for instance if it was drugs, animal cruelty, or false advertising I would not help the company who is selling these, although some other design might continue and help design their product. The reason why I would not do this is because the design will have the designers name on it, and this may ruin their career, and give yourself a bad name.

I don't think that unpaid internships are fair at all. Most of the people that will do this are people trying to find skills to get a job, or students getting more experience. This means that we do not have the money to do an internship. You need expericane with everything now to get a job, and if you cant get a internship this makes it so much harder to get a job. This is just a circle that you cant do anything. Especially the design industry, although if you get known then all those disadvantages become advatages as you can get work very easily.

Design's: Part A

Here are some designs that I thought of for the texture and look of the Graze box. Some are quick ideas, and others have been further developed.

Outside -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original box style:

Edited box style 1:

I have changed the colour slightly, which has brought out the texture in the cardboard more. I have also given the colour a natural, wood, organic colour as I thought that this would suit the company and product. This colour compared to the original looks much more natural, and happy. Seeing the difference with both side by side really shows how dull the original colour was.

 Edited box style 2:

In this design, I have added a small design to the top of the box. I thought that this would flow well with the logo, making the style of the box more attractive. I chose white for the colour, as the logo was white. Later I will go back over these, with my own logo, in part B. I think this looks much better than the plain top, it gives the receiver something to look at, and will interact with the receiver by the style.

 Edited box style 3:

I have continued to make the front the the box, more appealing, and less simple. I think this image adds to the natural look to the box, as this gives a slight tinge of brown around the Graze logo. I also think the circular motion around the Graze logo helps, as it is highlighting in a much unusual way the logo name.

 Edited box style 4:

I wanted to see what the design would look like if I added more contrast to the new design style. I am not sure what is better, because I like the subtle colour of the previous version, although this stands out a lot more, showing the company name a lot clearer.

 Edited box style 5:

I think this is my favourite one out of all the designs, as this shows a simple design, although interesting. I have darkened it, so this would become more of a contrast with the white logo. I think this works very well, and look more interesting, than the original. I think this design suits the company exactly, because I have used very natural colour and simplicity which would unconsciously reflect on the food to make people think of it all as natural and healthy and without lots of unnecessary ingredients. The background compared to the original has improved because my background colour is warmer and gives more of a friendly look to the company.

Inside -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original box style:

Edited box style 1:

I wanted the style to continue through-out the box, so I added a similar design inside the box to give it effect. At the same time I have also colour the box, to the same colour on the outside of the box. I think this looks more pleasing as the bright colour on the original was too bright. I also found this very plain.

Edited box style 2:

This is the same version as the previous, although I have increased the opacity of the design inside the box. I think this is not much, and looks aggressive. I don think this goes well with the organic, nature, and natural style of the product.

Edited box style 3:

I like this design which is plain, although I think it need something to be added with it, so this flows better with the rest of the product.

Edited box style 4:

I think this design is my best, as this is simple, although the logo in the background just creates a sense of style, so it is not too plain. I thin kthe colour I choose for the logo was right as this is bright, and standsout against the cardboard colour. Even thought you cant see the whole logo, you know what it says, and I think this makes the design just right.

Research: Part B

Graze has specifically said for part B;
"We like our logo, it says friendly and has charm, but we’d love it to be more distinctive and unique. So, part B is to redesign our logo. Make graze stand out from the crowd and better communicate what we are all about".

Simply I have to redesign the logo, to make it unique, and friendly. I think these are the main two points that I have to focus on, in this part. I came across this website that would help me create a logo that is media friendly, one of Graze's requirements.

http://www.makeuseof.com:

Don’t Try To Tell A Story

Take a look around and you’ll notice that many great logos are simply made up of the business name (or abbreviation) in a unique font and colour, with sometimes an adjacent graphical element.  Don’t obsess over trying to communicate everything about what you do through your logo.  While you want the style to be appropriate and complementary to your business, your logo doesn’t have to explicitly tell people what it is.
Your logo doesn’t need a house if you’re a real estate broker or a book if you’re a bookstore.  Even if your name doesn’t clearly convey the type of business you are (i.e. “Bill’s Photography”), your marketing activities and messages will associate your logo with your brand in peoples’ minds.  Besides, people typically won’t see your logo in isolation without any context.  Once you free yourself of the burden of trying to say too much with your logo, you are more likely to create one that is cleaner and more effective.

Detach Text & Graphics

Because you can’t foresee all the ways you might use your logo design in the future, you want it to be versatile.  You may need to rearrange or use only a portion of your logo if it doesn’t fit well into a particular size and shape.  For some very small icons, it is usually impossible to include your entire logo.  As a result, many companies use a single letter or graphical element from their logo for social media purposes.  If your text and graphics are tightly intertwined, it will be difficult to divide your logo design into separate pieces.

Design's: Part B

Here are the designs I created for the Graze company. While making these logos, I kept in mind what the company wanted; natural, organic, and memorable.

Here are all the designs I have created, some are in different colour versions to see which colour would best represent the company, and others are completely new designs.

What I first thought of was grass, as this is the most related word to Graze. I thought that I could add a grass effect in the background behind the logo.

Design 1:

This was my first version, I wanted the grass in a dark green to represent the organic, natural characteristics of the company. I added a heart in the 'G' as I thought that this would make people see the organic, healthiness of the companies products. I think the layout of this design is good, although I don't think the grass effect works.

Design 2:

I have changed the colour of the grass in the background, and I think that this works a lot better. I think the previous version was too dark, and needed to be lightened up. I think the only problem now is that I don't like how the grass just cuts off the edge of the image.

Design 3:

I made the grass slightly lighter, and to have less shading as this will then bring out the company's title - Graze. With a brighter background the company's name is shown better, and easier for the public to see.

Design 4:

I again changed the background of the grass, to see if this would improve the design of the logo. I don't think this has, as this does not look appealing.

Design 5:

Once thinking about the edges of the logo, and graphics being cut off, I decided to fade the bottom which will look better. The black area can also be coloured white, or any colour depending what the background is. I think the colour of the font is good, as I think this represents the company well, with the bright green natural colour. I also also changed the colour of 'nature delivered.com' as I thought that this would make a better effect to the logo. I made the heart see though, so you can see the grass effect in the background, as I thought that this could be a interesting effect on the logo.

Design 6:

I think this is the bets grass effect design, as the colours used in the background really go well, and shows organic, and healthy products from Graze company. I think I should change the colour of the heart, as the pink may relate to that this is just a woman's company, and men might be intimidated to buy from Graze. If I would change it I think I would change it to a yellow/orange colour which will be natural

  ------------------------

Design 7:

I really like this one it is modern, and will be memorable. I like that the background is white, and has some ribbons in the background. I don't think this represents the company as good as others though. I used yellow colour to show a natural organic feeling to the logo. I think the heart colour is a good colour, and I think the pink and orange goes well.

Design 8:

I made another version, as I though that this could have potential. I was trying to create a logo that looked modern, although I don't think this will go well with the company's thoughts of natural, and organic.

  ------------------------

Design 9:

I got this idea from the original Graze logo. I think this looks neat, although it can be improved. I used the colour green to show natural, organic characteristics for the company. Again I would change the colour of the heart, as this is too feminine. I think this style is too plain and boring, and this wont be memorable.

Design 10:

I have continued to edit the design, and I have added graphics within the writing to make it more interesting, and changed the heart colour. I think this looks better than the first version. I think the heart is really good as this attracts the viewer at the heart showing that it is healthy.

Design 11:

I have changed the colour of the font and the graphics inside to see what colours work better with the design of the logo. I think the blue goes better with the green, and the white heart. The previous design was too green, this is why I think this version is better.

Design 12:

I wanted to see what it would look like in yellow, I done this because I thought that yellow would attract attention, and would represent to organic. I think it is too much.

Design 13:

I have also created one in blue, I think this looks better than the yellow version, although I still don't think this will look very attractive, and become memorable to the public.

  ------------------------

Design 14:

I really like this design, it looks modern, and because of this I think it will be memorable. The 'E' will definitely be memorable, and I have used the same end of the logo as the original logo by Graze. I like how everything is spaced out, and there is no clutter.

Design 15:

I have done another version although changing the colour around the '.com'. I think i prefer the first version as this is too faded, and looks washed out.

Design 16:

Again I have changed the colour of the '.com', although I think this looks the best colour to use for the company.

Design 17:

Here I tried changing the design of the logo, changing and positioning them around. I don't think this looks as good as the previous logo, as that was much more spacious.

Design 18:

I tried adding leafs, to show the organic characteristic of the company. I think this is ok although I don't think this would become on a web page. I think it is not simple.

Design 19:

I don't like this one at all, I think it looks too big, too much clutter, and is not attractive at all. I wanted to see if this would look at good, including images in the background. I only like the nature delivered part on one leaf. I think that looks tidy.

Design 20:

I don't like this one at all either.

Design's: Part B [Final Logo]

I have chosen my logo, and it will be this:

I choose this logo, as I thought that this is the most simple, although effective. I like that there is space within the logo, and has a white background. I feel that if you can make a logo with a white background, it will be effective. The company asked for a memorable, organic, and natural look to the logo. I fell that I have achieved that, as the 'E' is definitely memorable, and the colour around the '.com' shows the orgainic and natural look to the company. I think the font is chosen well, because I think this is modern, and also looks professional.

Design's: Part A [My Logo]

As I have created a couple of logos for the company, I have chosen one that will look the best on the all types of material; internet, cardboard, paper, poster. I think this is the logo that is able to adapt the most to any area, and material.

As I have chosen my logo, I am going to add this on the front of the packaging to see how it will look. I have done some adjustments to the logo to see if I could improve the design.

Design 1:

Here I have added the logo to the same area of the box as the original logo, as I thought that this was a good place to have the logo. I think it looks neat and tidy with the logo at the bottom right of the box. I think the design looks really good on the box. I think this looks modern, natural, and unique.

Design 2:

Here I have changed the colour of the .com. I have done this three times, seeing what would look colour would look better.

Design 3:

This is the final version of different colours used. I think this final version is the best colour to choose, as this stands out more, and this I think merges better with the black font, and the background of the box colour.

Design 4:

This version, I wanted to see what it would look like if I added the graphics which I used on the original Graze logo. I think this goes well, although I still think that the simple logo without this is better. I think the graphics takes the focus away from the logo itself, also this makes the logo much bigger which is limiting itself to where you can place the logo.

Design 5:

This is also a graphic I used on the Graze logo, before I did my own designs. I wanted to use these over my own to see if this improved the logo. Again I think this makes the logo to big which will limiting itself to where you can place the logo. I think the idea of the graphic is good, as this brings out the natural, organic side of the company.

Design 6:

I have changed the font so that the material of the box is shown slightly thought the font. I don't think this is as good as the black font, as the black stands out and been seen easily.

Design 7:

I made the font lighter, so more of the texture would be shown through the font. I think this is too light, and merges in with the background colour too much. I think the black font is the best as this stands out a lot from the background colours. Also the black will been easier for people to remember as the font is in black which is the most important part.

Final Outside Design:

I choose this design on the outside of the packaging, as I thought that this looked part of the package. It looks professional, neat and clear. I think the colour I used around the '.com' was a good choice, as this also makes the font stand out.

 -----------------------

Inside the packaging, designs.

I couldn't do much to the inside, as this is mostly covered by the packaging of pots, although I have changed the logo of the poster.

Design 1:

This version I have changed the logo on the poster, and printed it on the bottom. I don't think this will be used as the final piece because this is using more printing ink, and this company is trying to portray a sense of natural, organic theme. So unnecessary ink printing wont help.

Design 2:

This will be the final piece of the packaging inside, as this will only have the new logo printed on the poster, and the change of colour on the cardboard.

Research: Part C

For part C: I have been told to design a leaflet that will be posted to hundreds if people in England, to make Graze more known, and more customers.

Brief:
Part C: Part C is a bit different... We want to see how these new elements would work in a direct mail marketing campaign. We see it as a really interesting medium and we’re looking for a creative solution that will stand out from ‘junk mail’ and make people leap onto the internet to sign up.

First I will research existing leaflets and see how they have laid out there own designs. I will find inspiration from them, and create my own work with some existing designing in mind. I will come up with my own ideas as well, to see how these designs will look against professional existing designs.

A good idea I used from these leaflets was the different colours. When I will design my own, I will see if I can change the colours of the leaflets, so this will create a wide interest in the leaflets.

I found that many designs are very 'cartoony', there are no photography, or abstract graphics in the background. I think if I designed a cartoon leaflet for Graze, this would not suit the company.

There is this design where I can use photos on the left side of the leaflet, and information on the right side. I don't think I would use as many images as this leaflet has used, as I think that this is too cramp, and all squished in together.

Here is some leaflets, and information that was made from Graze. I like that they have used a texture over the booklet, although I think it could add a bit more to the design to make it more interesting.

Seeing these research images, I am thinking of some ideas, I thought that the textured look over the page will look effective, and will also keep with the company look. I am thought of making several leaflets with maybe different colours, so not all the same. I'm not to sure about this as I think the company is after a look that says, 'we are trying to save the world using less ink, and recycled materials'.
